    1) How many more goals has the USMNT scored in these 828 minutes than their opposition?
    2) How many of these 17 opponents didn't score while Freddy was on the field?
    3) How many goals have the opposition scored in these 828 minutes?
    4) How many goals has the USMNT scored in Freddy's 828 minutes?
    5) Freddy's USMNT record for his 17 appearances is 9 wins 3 draws and 5 defeats. How many goals did the USA give up in those 5 defeats while Freddy was on the field?

any guesses? The idea that Freddy is a defensive liability is pretty well crushed by the evidence. :)

Does it look like anyone cares enough to play this game?

Since you ask so nicely, I'll give you a taste.

    3) The USMNT has given up 6 goals in Freddy's 828 minutes on the field.
4 in the 4-2 home loss to Mexico, 86 minutes.
1 in a 3-1 loss away to Costa Rica, 27+ minutes.
    1 in a 2-1 loss away to Trinidad & Tobago. 69 minutes.

The USMNT has given up zero goals in Freddy's 14 other appearances a total of 646 minutes.

Nice research. So if you break it down even more, Freddy has played roughly 9 games. In 7 of those games, the other team didn't score. In 2 of those games, 6 goals were scored (and 4 were to a really good Mexico team that Bornstein got raped by). Pretty good stuff. The Union had the 3rd least goals allowed this year until they stopped playing Freddy, then subsequently gave up 8 goals in their last 3 games. This idea that Freddy is a defensive liability is rubbish.

I'm not gonna lie. I'm pretty lazy. I just want to subscribe to your newsletter so you can do the research for me, and I'll invest in what you tell me.

For me the analysis is so much easier: I would pay money to watch Adu play.

Besides Clint he is probably the only one. I bought the MLS live thing just to watch his matches. When he was not playing I never watched it.

Put him on a swarm of midgets team with 4 or 5 latin american or spanish players in the midfield, 4 Stoke city defenders and a killer dmid and you have a team that might lose, but I'll be watching and I think many others would as well.

Extremely underpriced. People get caught up in the bullshit too much. When you watch Adu play he unlocks a defense like a master-key. No one in our pool ever had that ability. I would say, Adu has been our best Nat in the pool since he's been called up. He gives us more than anyone in the pool as he does exactly what we need and unlocks defenses with ease.

The only other losses Freddy played in were:
Spain away loss 1-0. 45 minutes, zero goals allowed when he was on the field.
England away loss 2-0. 22+ minutes, zero goals allowed when he was on the field.

Freddy was a beast in Spain game. We had several chances created by Adu we failed to capitalize on.

I will have to rep this. Spain was tired of chasing him around and had Puyol foul him to get him out.

He had two spectacular moves, one in which he chested the ball over himself and defender on the turn, final ball wasnt there, but I cant imagine anyone in our pool trying that much less pulling it off. He had some other good runs and crosses in there.

Amen brother. He also has defenses chasing shadows, nailed back in their own end, worried about when the next well placed 40 yard lob might spring someone behind them.

I like his slick pass for ej's "offside" goal. And his 40 yard lob which set ej free 1 on 1 with the keeper.

The three most important aspect of attacking soccer IMO are (1) accurate passes to the forward foot, (2) first touches, and (3) movement w/o the ball. Here's my problem with Adu:

1.) Freddy is great at finding passes, but the actual passes themselves tend to be wildly inconsistent. Sometimes they're accurate right to the forward foot, and sometimes they're behind the player or poorly weighted and cause the attack to slow down.
2.) Freddy's first touch is inconsistent as well. Many times he controls the ball quite well, however at least 20% of the time his first touch pops up or away in an unintended direction. If you watch top level #10s, they'll have maybe 3 or 4 bad first touches a game.
3.) Movement is probably Freddy's worst trait. He doesn't make good runs. He's easy to mark out of the game. He disappears for long stretches. This is what he needs to improve the most.

Freddy is a great dribbler and he can definitely find passes, but he needs to improve his basic skills before he makes an impact on the game. He's certainly good enough for MLS right now, so hopefully he gets to work on his weaknesses this season.
