Ghana's Sly Tetteh, the technical brain behind the recent resurgence of the Black Stars, died today. RIP.

    What is the African Cup?

Do you mean the Africa Cup of Nations? - it will start on 21st January 2012 and finish on 12th February 2012. The opening match is Equatorial Guinea v Libya.

The internet has search facilities. For such a well-known tournament, the information is not very hard to find.

Cameroon NT, Indomitable Lions, are back to their old ways. For those of you who follow African football & who are old enough to remember; Cameroonian players got a reputation in 1994 for refusing to play cause their bonuses disappeared in mid-air (literally)! Basically the then minister of sports or was it territorial admin, don't remember, got on a presidential flight from Yaounde headed to Los Angeles with funds that was supposed to be disbursed to players. Long story short, the plane & it passengers arrived LA but no money. Guy swore that the money got lost in the plane. Well players only took to the pitch to avoid FIFA sanctions & ended up with some pretty humiliating results...

Cameroon has since managed to get out of those dark ages & we have not heard of serious problems with bonuses; until last nihgt! Cameroon was scheduled to play Sudan, Morocco & Algeria. Played the 1st 2. Algeria was supposed to be 2morrw until the players said "not until we see our paper!" The federation tried to claim that the match was a no-profit negotiation. All lies coz turns out Algeria handled all expenses including a bonus package of $30,000.00. By when the federation realized they had been exposed they offered to pay the players $40,000.00. Too late: players were upset, disappointed & categorically refused to board the plane to Algiers. Game cancelled & natrurally Algeria is seeking a FIFA sanction on Cameroon.

I have mixed feelings about this. Sure it's a load of bullshit from the Federation that the players put up with but to boycott the national squad like that is regrettable. Especially after having failed to qualify to the ANC.

I slightly disagree with you on this one ChaCha. The Cameroon federation has a very bad rep (really really bad rep) Cameroon usually has to struggle to get friendlies coz of that federation's rep. Funny thing, when they manage to get some, they end up cancelling for obscure bizarre reasons. Can u believe that in the past 12 months Cameroon turned down Brazil, cancelled Salvador, Mexico, China & Gabon?!?!? That is insane!

I am 250% with those players this time. I wasn't with them when they f**ked up our world cup; but this time they are well on their rights. You change coaches practically every year, irrespective of results! Clemente was doing a good job reconstructing the team, why did they fire him?!?!? I think the players have had enough & if that is what it takes to get the entire federation admin to step down, then so be it.

Oh, small tit-bit that filtered this morning, Eto'o had already signaled as far back as Friday that there might be a problem, coz he was unhappy that the Federation sent 20 reprs (20!!! for a friendly competition lol) alongside the players & guess what, those 20 representatives were living in utter luxury! That is crazy!

The way you've explained it, I now get it, since it sounds like it's not quite just about the money with the players, but rather they're also fed up with the fed (excuse the wordplay) and the corruption and backwardness. Thank you for expanding on it.

Being from Guatemala I can relate to the situation in Cameroon NT because we've suffered from the same exact troubles for many years with our corrupt and inept joke of a federation.

This is the type of corrupt bs that continues to stunt Africa's growth on the World stage. Sad and regrettable. I feel for the players bc this is the same stuff that we were dealing with all the way back when Zaire qualified for the World Cup. I don't see us ever having an African team win the WC no matter how much talent we amass when our federations are continuously mismanaged like this.
