Meh, I don't really care for the Dixie approach. If it was going to be done though it certainly shouldn't be FC. If you are going to talk Dixie then it must be SC for soccer as football is the sport of Auburn, UGA and Alabama not an MLS team.

A better way to use Dixie would be Dixie United especially seeing as fans of the Atlanta team will be from around the Deep South and Dixie United could be a symbol of solidarity among the fans of the club no matter which of the Southern States they hail from.

Leave Dixie in the past, where it belongs. I don't want that name anywhere near my team.

I want to ask you why you say this before I jump to conclusions because my initial assumption is that you are ignorant of where the term comes from and are using this in conjunction with connotations derived from the ignorance of other people as well.

I don't like using the name either but not because it "belongs in the past". How a name derived from the Mason-Dixon line that is used to include the whole south belongs in the past is beyond me unless you think it is tied to something else, which is not true outside of ignorant people who might use the term to make such a connection.

A lot of people have very negative reactions to the term Dixie. If you did a word association game with Dixie a large portion of the responds would reflect negatively. There is no reason to be intention provocative and give people a legitimate reason to be turned off from the team.

It's funny, when we found out that they were going to name the Philadelphia team the Union people were worried that it would offend southerners.

I think Confederate is too long to be used in an offical team name, but Confederate Army would be a decent supporters club name.

The bottom line is that the word has negative connotations for most people, which makes the derivation of the name irrelevant. End of story.

No really, some marketing people were really worried about it. That is why they emphasized the term being about the union of the 13 colonies becoming a country. They were also worried that the term Union would turn off conservatives too.
Worrying about offending possible customers is what marketing people do.

It's going to have "Atlanta" in the name somehow. Soccer is a global sport and people all over the world will be exposed to the brand of the team.

Atlanta FC, FC Atlanta, Atlanta SC...
Nicknames: Firebirds, Pride, Phantoms, Heat, Renagades, Locos(Locomotives)....

No to Dixie, even though I and many people educated about the origin in the south and what it means, have nothing against the term, even a lot of African-Americans. My objection is because of the marketing and the PC ignorance.

No to any thing military, because people would assume its Civil War related.

No to south any thing, reason it just sounds dumb, we dont have any teams up north called North whatever. And every one will know its in the south. (North Stars was an exception).

Personally, I do not like Silverbacks, but if some how they moved to MLS, then so be it.

Even people "educated" about the origin of the term have a problem with it. It's not an "ignorance" issue. People said the same thing about the Confederate flag. They both have other meanings besides what the "educated" think they mean, and I'm glad neither will be associated with the team.

i have always liked Atlanta Legion SC/FC ... as there is a great dearth of roman inspired pro sports iconography in the landscape and the possibilities are endless.

but with blank owning the team i would not be surprised if you just got Atlanta Falcons SC ... but maybe he'd opt for another similar bird theme for branding purposes which i think makes Atlanta Firebirds SC/FC the likely candidate ... and better than just Falcons so there is that.

Just to be nitpicky, I'm curious to what you call the confederate flag?

I wrote out a long response but decided to delete it to keep the conversation about soccer.

But I do want to just say, look we can all learn to respect each others views on the history of the south. But our history is not our future. That said, I understand from a PR move that people can be over sensitive so anything that could rub people the wrong way should be avoided.

It's not my favorite, but I could get behind Atlanta Crossroads FC

Figure it ties in the railroad theme and also the theme as being the hub of the south. Plus, sounds very much like a soccer club.

It would be nice to have a name that's associated with our history as a major railroad hub
