I figured this topic needed its own thread now that Gen. Patreus has weighed in and my friend Chris who is currently serving in Afghanistan sent me a facebook message this morning telling me all units over there are currently on lockdown because of these idiots....

Looks like they aren't backing down.

Why shouldn't they? They are perfectly within their First Amendment rights and not breaking any laws. We shouldn't appease wackjobs who might go too far by denying anyone their rights. Isn't this the absolute perfect example of the ideals of the American Republic? If we start denying people their rights under the Constitution, we ought to simply declare this a facist police state, and call it a day. They should be able to build their Mosque anywhere they want to.

    Oops, wrong thread. ;)

See how incredibly stupid this sounds?

Only American flag wrapped Korans should be burned. I don't want anyone leaving happy.

I'll pass on the burning part but I reserve the right to laugh at those who believe in the koran.

I'll reserve the right to laugh at anyone who believes in any religion. ;)

I bet there's a wacky christian cult out there (probably run by Mel Gibson's dad) that thinks paper versions of the Bible are sacreligious. Just stone tablets, motherfcukers!

No, not really, the same argument holds. They have every right to do it, whether or not we think it's a good idea.

The difference is that there's a potential threat of retaliation against our own troops due to the actions of these morons (who I'm guessing are self-proclaimed supporters of our military). The only threat of violence involved in the building of the "mosque" seems to involve the people bitching about it being built in the first place. Not really an apt comparison in any way.

One lunatic that wants attention and a few reporters who want a story

Um, what he is doing will be used as propaganda for Bin Laden and co. It's the unfortunate fact. The news perhaps shouldn't have given this guy any air time, but they did. Blame the media.

It's like that scene in that one Dirty Harry movie where some nutjob is threatening to set himself on fire. Harry disguised as a tv cameraman, in all his understated compassion says...."uh yea, you can go ahead and burn yourself up and we'll break out the weenies and the marshmellows but nobody's gonna see it on the 11:00 news cause I ain't filmin' it" :D

Same could apply here if any news orgs had the common decency not to give this anus any airtime. Now the clubbing of his sect by Vets would be ok to show at 11:00 :D

Thanks dude, I sent him a nice long message this morning. He just needs to make it to December before he's back here drinking suds with his best friends. I pray for him every night....

    This.

This group also isn't touting their action as an attempt to build bridges between East and West and between faiths. At least the Ground Somewhere Non-Mosque is purportedly FOR that very purpose, being built for a congregation of Muslim hippies.

And there is your biggest issue. We can't draw cartoons with Alla in them or we get death threats. We can't speak ill of them or they will blow something up. But they can do and say whatever they want about us and we just sit there with a stupid smile.

Burning the Koran is dumb. So is threatening to kill the South Park guys.

So you think we should turn around and throw a hissy fit when we're insulted in any way? ******** that, we're better than they are, so let's act like it, no need to follow the lead of a bunch of petulant, marginalized children (and by "they" I assume you mean only that subset of Muslims that does behave in the way you're describing).

And considering we've invaded two Islamic countries in the last decade I don't think we've exactly been just sitting there with a stupid smile anyway.

Imagine if this joker slips (or gets pushed...by accident) and falls into the bonfire? We'd have a Darwin Award all-time winner!

I'm sure the assholes would find a way to hate each other and blow each other up anyway, but I always, always find it so interesting that religion is once again front and center in yet another international dustup.

By the way, my schadenfreude dowser is pointing at burning that church down.

This is great. At least these guys have let me and my fellow western muslims know that they are my enemies, instead of hiding behind weaselly excuses, like the Muhammad cartoonists did. They have also played into the hands of the insurgents in Iraq and Afghanistan. I bet there's an attack within the month in those countries that will be cited as revenge. Completely counterproductive act.

I hope that Muslims in the West act with a cool head and only criticise with words. Some elements will speak for direct action, but in my view they would be foolish to do so.
