so, they are delaying because they couldn't put together a staff and team in 7 months?

they do realize that in NA the contracts run thru december ... so most out of contract MLS players (the core of any good NASL team, see Scorpions, San Antonio) will have already been signed by other NASL and USL clubs. same goes for poaching any quality NASL journeymen.

so how on earth are they doing themselves any favours trying to create their squad in MID SEASON? it is only making it harder ... sure they slacked off and took forever putting together a staff, their bad. and sure it might not be ideal to only just start putting your squad together in Nov/Dec of 2012 for March training but at least at this time there are tons of out of contract players to choose from ... not so much in June. unless they are hoping these professionals who don't make much money will just sign and not play for 6 months?

    gotta say ... not impressed.

Considering the MASSIVE GLOBAL WEIGHT that the Cosmos INTERNATIONAL SUPERBRAND pulls, I'd not be surprised.

This and this. When are planning on signing players and what players will want to be sitting around for over half a year? Are they going to schedule some exhibitions?

    Not impressed, indeed.

Stover is wrong, a new team can be formed pretty fast

The NSC Minnesota Stars fielded a team in 2010 after announcing they would field a team in mid December of 2009. That Stars were a start-from-scratch organization after the Thunder folded late that same year. Starting with no players or coach and using the makeshift staff of the NSC, the team played out its first season finishing in 7th place out of 12 teams and made the playoffs with a 11-12-7 record.
In 2011 the Atlanta Silverbacks threw a team together after having a two-year hiatus from Division 2 professional play. Yes, they had the structure in place with a PDL team and their own stadium. But they went out, found a coach, assistants, and put together a team in time for the season. Albeit it was not a good team, but they did entertain their fans for most of their home games, keeping it close and drawing an average of 2,866 in the process.
The Carolina RailHawks owner Selby Wellman suddenly liquified his team early in 2010 putting the NASL in danger of not being sanctioned. Traffic Sports entered the picture and funded the team so the NASL could have 8 teams – a USSF requirement for a league. They did retain coach Martin Rennie but the team had to be assembled again from scratch including all new player contracts. They did so and had a team on the field by the spring of that year. Not only did they have a team in place, they actually won the Regular Season NASL Championship with a 17-8-3 record.

Sorry, but reports that Nick Rimando has signed for the Cosmos is unfounded.

I agree that the brand name Cosmos and the buzz about this team will continue to attract interest from all levels of football, D 1 and D 2. The problem is enticing European players. They already think the Cosmos are in MLS. D 2 is full of Latin American and Caribbean players. So, they know the situation. U.S. and Canadian players are also aware of the situation and the opportunities.

The NASL has a 30 day break between the apertura and clausura halfs of the season. This break coincides (or almost coincides) with the opening of the July transfer window. I expect the Cosmos to pick up a number of players in the Spring who will transfer from their clubs to NY in July. If that is true, the Cosmos would have less than 30 days to put their system of play in place before the opener. Tight, but it can be done.

According to someone who was there at the Q&A, Stover said the majority of the roster would be made up of college and academy guys with possibly a few out of contract MLS players. You know, like every other NASL team. So why couldn't they put together a team by March? Cosmos logic.

But let's say they plan on picking up players during the summer transfer window like you say. Where are they going to find these players? You know how expensive it would be to build a team through transfers? NASL clubs almost never use the transfer system because it is way too costly. They sign players out of contract. MLS doesn't even like paying transfers. And you are not going to get any better out of contract foreign players in the summer, than you would of gotten in the winter. In fact, they might even be of lesser quality than what NASL clubs have access to now.

What will be different is the quality of the American player who are the backbone of any MLS, NASL, or USL-Pro club. Any halfway decent player will have signed in December. Any out of contract MLS player will have committed to a NASL or USL team in the winter. The Cosmos will be picking through a waste paper basket without any waste.

You will likely end up with a far worse team talent wise, trying to build a team for August, than you have for March. That is the irony in all this. It makes no sense. To quote Cosmos COO Erik Stover,

Well what exactly do you think will be rolling out there in August?

I think one of the main reasons they want to join in the Fall season is because they are thinking with more time to sell tickets and less home games played (8) for the fall season they will fill Hofstra closer to capacity. If they had a smaller stadium with around 5000 seats maybe they would start in March/April.

There's no doubt they can put a team together by March, but with such a large stadium(13000) ther're probably worried about the optics of having 3000-4000 fans per game instead of say 7000-8000 they may draw(just a guess) in the fall season.

What makes them think that they'd sell THAT many more tickets in the extra time. Particularly since, if they wait to fill the roster in July or if they fill it earlier with the dregs of what the rest of USL/NASL didn't pick up, they won't have much of a product to sell. They seem to be under the mistaken impression (and have been since the beginning) that having the Cosmos name is some magical talisman that will lure people the 30 miles to Hofstra Stadium. At the end of the day they're still just a typical NASL/USL team (albeit one that seems to be setting itself up to have an even worse than typical on field team), that happens to have a flashy name. But even the most vapid of people will see through that pretty damn fast.

    Everything athletics68 has said. +1

If the Cosmos aren't working on signing players right now, when as has been correctly pointed out the time is right to be making such moves, then how can their fans and supporters have any confidence at all that they'll field anything even close to a competitive side next August? If they intend to use the transfer market in July, they will end up spending an ass ton of money and for what? And even if they do somehow complete a team in a month, they won't be prepared to compete in the NASL.

It doesn't make any sense at all.

Something is wrong here, bad wrong.

    Link is dead.

Also if the Cosmos are setting themselves up the way it looks so far, they won't be hard to fight off. A PDL team would have a good chance of giving them a beatdown.

Well sure, even though they will have a difficult time competing I still say they should have to wait until 2014 on principle.

And so they have more time to get their act together, which they apparently need desperately.

Is it possible that they are just a paper tiger, without substance? That they need a delay because they won't have any money from the Middle East investors until after the Spring season? It does smell very fishy.

No idea. I want to believe they aren't and that they may legitimately have had issues which have delayed them like this.

I thought when they hired a coach finally that they would be prepared to jump in the pool with every other pro soccer team this week once the MLS cup was done, but for some reason they obviously were not prepared to do so.

What is the real reason? The explanations they've given so far are hard to accept on the face of it. Can't lock down a ticketing system? Really? Don't want to field a sub par team in front of "only 3,000 fans"?

Maybe they were more delusional about what it really takes to make it at even the NASL level? So much so that the NASL themselves didn't even pick up on it? I can't imagine they are very happy with this, either but I understand their decision to let the Cosmos play in the Fall. I just disagree with it.

It would be serving the league, their fans and the city better, it would seem, to just play in 2014

You idiots don't get it, THIS IS THE COSMOS.

Ribbery is actively trying to get on the team, Beckham wanted TOO LITTLE for them to sign him.

Seriously, the world is just going to line up to play for this team... and virtually for free.

Just wait till the Clasura. WE'RE ALL DOOMED!

I agree with so many of the posts that are critical of this decision by the Cosmos and NASL. July 12, 2012 is when they announced they were joining in 2013. I am a fan of the Cosmos and want to see them succeed - which is precisely why I am so disappointed by this decision. This is not how a successful team operates and is not doing what they state their goal in delaying is - getting it right the first time. A note to Stover, the Cosmos and NASL leadership - you just got it wrong the first time.

    Enough with the transfer window.

The transfer window for D2 in the United States is a meaningless.

No D2 team with long term plans is going to spending money on transfers. And you can sign out of contract players at any time.

The bulk of the players that the Cosmos are going to pull from are already playing in the U.S. and Canada where most of them are on contracts through October or November.

As Ole pointed out, picking over the out of contact players in May/June is a loser's game. They'll have a worse roster starting the second half of the season than they would if they tried to throw something together now. Not only that, they'll be playing in a league of teams that have had time to come together and play cohesively.

If they play the fall season, it could get real ugly.
