Liberia is ranked 159th in the FIFA world rankings. Omar Cummings was denied a work permit because he played for a National team that was ranked lower than 70th. If Nagbe has aspirations of ever playing for big bucks in the UK, he should declare for country ranked in the top 70. I think.

oh, definitely. i was being sarcastic. Liberia is far from the utopia i am sure they'd hope it would be in the late 19th century.

An even more incredible story though os his dad making a comeback in international soccer at 43. Wonder in the Timbers could give him a tryout?

Not only is Liberia not a mini-America, it was actually founded by the US government (or with a lot of help from US gov)

Speaking of that, I wonder if Nagbe is an Americano-Liberio ?

Darlington Nagbe is Liberian like his dad Joe but he is getting his American citizenship in hopes to play for the USMNT.

Not sure. He has been living in the USA 1/2 his life as he came when he was 10 so he grew up in the States and played at Akron U. I read he is in the process of becoming a naturalized American so hopefully soon!

What I was actually asking is if Nagbe's has any grand parents that migrated to Liberia from America.

Supposedly Nagbe is close to getting his citizenship.

In terms of options on the right (thinking about backups for Landon, if Landon is right mid/winter)- Nagbe would be very competitive with Joshua Gatt, Joe Gyau, Joe Carona
and others. All these guys could also play the role of the late game, 'energy' guy.

Hows he looked this year? Haven't seen his name mentioned much in the MLS flavor thread but that could be due to the citizenship part.

Remembered him in college and thought he was really good. Lost touch since he came to MLS other than seeing him score a killer goal in his rookie season....

Is he getting married? Didn't he have to leave the country during the draft just to get a visa?? Sure its not a GC?

After a slow start though, Nagbe has produced well the last month. And moving from Spencers long ball, to a Porters style should help show what he really has next year.

He is getting married (to an American), but as far as I know he still hasn't doesn't have a green card yet so it will be at least 3 years before he is a citizen. I think it is strange how Colombians can get green cards less than a year after coming to MLS, yet they still won't give a green card to Nagbe who already spent half his life living here.

    Here's some good news:

@MerrittPaulson: ... Darlington Nagbe's green card was just approved

Basically, they are drawing out of different pots (assuming they aren't winning them in the Green Card Lottery). For exceptional individuals in their field, it's easier to get a GC. Maybe it's playing in the WC or Olympics, maybe it's being MVP in your league back home or coming to MLS and being among the top performers -- they've done something to make them stand out. They are among the "best" (and often best paid) in the profession globally. The same process is used for Nobel Prize winners or artists or writers or folks like Beckham and Henry. That's much easier to do than get a GC for someone who is coming up the ranks.

    So when is Nagbe's wedding?

He's eligible for US citizenship 3 years after that, right?

You can get them something nice from Macy's or Bed, Bath & Beyond.

If he's smart, they should go ahead and get legally married now to shave a few months off the citizenship wait.

Thus being eligible for the world cup 2014? I like your thinking.

    I wish. 3 + 2012 = 2015. 1 year too late.
