There is a new movie coming out soon called Playing for Keeps, which stars Gerard Butler of the 300 fame as a former Celtic and DC United player who is trying to become a soccer analyst for ESPN (and make the ladies swoon and inspire kids and not sleep with Catherine Zeta-Jones for some reason).

Evidently, the jersey (3 stripes!) and the team get a ton of mentions. From the trailer it looks like your standard romcom fare, but it's cool nonetheless.

I wonder if Thohir/Chang had anything to do with this, or maybe it was just written that way.

Obviously not filmed at RFK else we would have heard about it, right?

I guess nobody went to the screening hoping for an announcement by the team formerly known as DC United Women to make an announcement about their new team name.

This should prove once and for all that DCU are the true Spartans of MLS.

That's correct. Have you ever seen a Spartan in a sweater vest? Neither have I.

The cars in the trailer have VA plates (although a bunch of the shots didn't really look like NOVA to me), I would assume they just chose to go with the local team.

That's pretty good free press ...

Can't remember an MLS club getting an actual role in a movie as part of the plot... albeit a movie that won't be seen by that many people.

There was the Galaxy in I Love You Man but that was more of a scene, not a role

    Am I missing any?

When I google MLS and movies or pop culture I just get a bunch of Beckham links

There were several DCU references in the movie Arlington Road back in 1999. I never saw it, but supposedly there were DCU references in Pay it Forward as well. But they weren't plot points, that I know of.

Don't forget that Gerard Butler played American soccer legend Frank Borghi in "The Game of Their Lives" when he defeated the evil lead singer of Bush in the 1950 World Cup.

Also, of course, DCU was prominently featured in "Offside!: The Roy Lassiter Story"

I remember when I went to the screening for that. I got off work early and got there a few hours early and figured I would mosey around the neighborhood. When I walked by the theater I happened to notice Roy standing and waiting out front. So I asked him what he was doing there so early and he said he came to pick up a pass and must have left too soon.

For those that like long walks.

I'm totally going to watch this. Props to Ms. Transatlantic for noticing the Celtic shirt in the commercial last night. :D

Gerard Butler is a Celtic supporter perhaps also a DCU supporter.

Wait till we destroy NY2 - I believe it's known as a "Come to Jesus" moment, or in our case "El Diablo"

    96-01 primary jersey

Does that make it a Franken-retro kit?
