I've been having trouble wrapping my head around the rules for foreign players in La Liga. If someone could help me better understand what rules and regulations there are for foreign players in Spain, I would be in your debt. Rules for EU players, non-EU players etc...

    Thank you

Each La Liga team can have up to 3 non-EU players (jugadores extracomunitarios).

A non-EU player will generally become eligible for Spanish citizenship after playing in Spain for five years. This just happened with the Brazilian Marcelo at Real Madrid.

It's hard to say, there will be a great relationship with the player's own performance.
