Did I mention how my offices busy season coincides with MLS season? No I don't work for MLS :(. We got our 11th hour update out the door last night, at the 13th hour, and managed to overwrite a previous update because that update never made it into the code base :grumble: :grumble: :grumble:. So know we get to do a live production patch yeah!

Remember in this thread we discuss the:
(AAQ = Attendance Analysis Quotient. This figure is an overall attendance assessment, calculated from the weighted values of average attendance, median attendance, <10K percentage and >20K percentage. A lower figure represents a better attendance performance.)
This is a slight change from Andy's old formula which used simple ordinal values and provided a full ranking point separation for two numbers that may have been within a percentage. This ordinal system did not allow for fine differences to be seen, and may have painted a somewhat skewed view of the numbers (though to be honest there is not much difference in the two end of season sets).

The formula to find the weighted value for each column is:
Take the annual value and subtract it from the Max value for it's column. Then take that result and divide it by the (Max-Min) for its column. For example, for the average column
    18801 is the max
    13756 is the min
    5045 is the difference
To calculate the derived value for 2011
    Subtract 17869 from 18801 to get 932.
Divide 932 by 5045 then multiply by 100 to get 18

MLS Attendance is based on tickets distributed not tickets scanned. Therefore if a team sells or distributes X number of tickets, then X is the attendance for that match. Even if 0 people showed up for whatever reason, X would still be the official attendance. There are a number of reasons actual attendance may be lower or higher than the announced.

For as bad as it was, we are still ahead of last years pace, and last year turned out to be pretty darn good.

    This Week:
Another exciting week ahead of. NBCSN gets us rolling with Portland hosting Seattle in what should be the most boring and silent match of the weekend. Then we head northeast to Montreal where the Red Bulls come calling. The Fire are home to Philadelphia, Columbus and TFC renew Trillium hostilities at Crew Stadium, Vancouver hosts the Caribou of Colorado. DC hosts New England in a match that could be ugly for our purposes. The Texas rivalry has its one match in Houston when FCD comes to town. We get an MLS Cup rematch as SKC once again plays host to RSL. Then on Sunday Chivas USA and the Galaxy renew their rivalry.

    Season Stats:
Remember in the count columns everything above the 15k cell is a subset of the 15k number, and likewise everything below the 10k is a subset of that. Not that most of this matters this early, and practically nothing is gleaned from it, it is best to get into posting form early. We are 34 matches or 10.5% of the way through this season.

    AAQ Data:
Ah my first Wednesday morning posting of data it would not be an MLS season if I was not late in getting this up. Things are starting to shape up, we are currently holding 6th position, which is better than last year at this point. So there is really no reason to expect that we will not end up in the top 2-3 by seasons end. We must watch DC though a second anchor could spell trouble.

Comparison To Last Season and All-Time:
Kind of early for the change from last season to mean much, but comparisons to all time numbers tell a bit of a story. FC Dallas continues to show signs of major improvement. Montreal is way down, but they had huge first game numbers that are not really sustainable, I expect they will be fine by years end. DC on the other hand seems to have found the same cliff that Chivas fell off of last year.

The second table is more focused on this particular match number for each team. Recent is the most recent home attendance, current is the current season average, average and median are the teams average and median for this game number, and finally running average is where each team would be on average through this point of the season.

I'm really enjoying the notion that 17,498 is used in the same sentence as "for as bad as it was"!

We have a few 50k plus games in San Jose and Seattle coming upbthis summer.

    19k is a real possibility.

That is of course relative to the expected average now which is over 18.5k. And mostly refers to the smaller than expected crowds in NY, Colorado, and DC. We knew DC could be down, but this is worse than I think was expected. But I also understand what you mean, it is not that long ago that 17.5 would be seen as a good solid week or better. It is of course still solid but the expectation is for more.

These ratings are very new, and I expect there to be some kinks to work out over the first few threads they are in. Please leave your thoughts on them, including suggestions for improvements, and criticisms of data. Please also provide suggestions for the description paragraphs. I tried to make them as clear as possible, but I'm sure they could be better.
I have tried to make these a simple as possible for me to produce, so I am likely to be able to post them soon after the appropriate thread has been created.

    Game Ratings

These numbers are an attempt to assign a rating of how well an individual game's attendance matches up with performance of the league as a whole, and the individual team. The reference data is the previous year's average and standard deviation, for both the league, and the individual team. The numbers are the normal distribution's CDF multiplied by 100, and rounded to the nearest whole number. This means the valid range is from 0 to 100.

    Floating Window

A floating window number is the average attendance for that team over the last X number of games, or X calendar years. So, for 17 games, it is the average of the last 17-n games from the previous season and the n games from the current season. For 1 year, it is the average from one year prior to the noted date through the noted date, inclusive. e.g. for 2014-03-10 it would be from 2013-03-10 through 2014-03-10 inclusive. For each floating window size, a prior and a current value are provided, as well as the difference between them. The dates for prior and current are specified below, and the values there are inclusive of games played on that date.

My data seems to show that Philly had an absolutely abysmal attendance (for them) as well.

Overall, if you calculate it out using my floating window numbers, we are slightly in the positive for league as a whole for the season, but not by much, with an average increase of 3.3 people per game. This doesn't mean much, though, because none of the teams have many home games under their belt, so differences in the home openers are likely overshadowing other differences (I'm looking at you TFC and Montreal).

Not sure I totally understand what you are getting at but by next year there will be lot more seats available for Toronto's home opener and since it won't happen until May, the weather should be better too.

    @TOareaFan

You guys opened at Rogers Centre last year and had opening day attendance in excess of 25k, because this season was at BMO you could not possibly match, thus an artificially bad comparison.

ok..I get it....the average will work itself out over the season....and, as I said, there will be 3ok seats to sell for the delayed home opener in 2015!

Too early to talk about 2015....but it will be a really disjointed season here with the team on the road until May and then the team forced out of the stadium for a month for the Pan Am games.....there will be big bunches/clumps of consecutive home matches.

Agreed. Toronto will make up their numbers over the season, but their home opener this year when compared to last year's paints them in a bad light.

The same is somewhat true for Montreal as well, but for different reasons. They will still do decently well over the rest of the season, but since their first game was so much worse this year when compared to last, it makes them look much worse right now than is warranted.

I thought the initial expansion was to 25k in 2015 and then growing to 30k in 2016? Did they change the stadium expansion schedule?

The seating expansion to 30k is all to be done by next year...I think the confusion comes in because by next year the stadium will have two capacities....30k for soccer with the end seats pulled out and 25k for CFL football with those end seats retracted back to expose the endzones. There is no staged expansion where the seating grows first to 25k then 30k later (that I am aware of).

The work done between end of season 2015 and a second delayed home opener in 2016 are the niceties of the roof and improved concourses and concession areas.

Maybe having one more game at the BigOwe (3 versus 2 last year...I think) will make up for things in Montreal.

Only if they actually manage to sell the tickets.

Tomorrow's game is an important benchmark, if they end up in the low 20's then there is essentially no difference.

I guess being winless in their first 4 is not helping. Montreal, admirably, cares if its teams win and punish them when they don't

I was referring to the soccer capacity being larger than football; generally, that's not how it works.

Oh, I see....it is a function of the CFL size field. Not only is the actual field longer than an NFL one by 10 yards but the endzones are much larger too......so the field does not fit in to the current dimensions of the stadium....the solution is to have the ends replaced with retractable seating so that the CFL field fits....means about 5k of seats disappear for CFL games.
