It's a great organization to be part of??? Hrm, hopefully MLS has done away with any drug testing requirements, because he's on some good stuff, there.

When last I saw him, I was channelsurfing and ran across him playing as a keeper in an indoor league. They were losing and he got pulled for some yutz wearing a day-glow green "sixth attacker" penny. There was much laughter and a couple of phone calls saying "Guess what I just saw!!!"

Didn't he also write a white paper on age scandals in cup stacking?

I'm still waiting on a peer review for that.

I'm not going to respond to your entire dissertation on the ACC, because I clearly haven't put the thought (or volume of words :)) into the conference's business practices. I will say though, that I totally agree with you on Stinespring. The offense was awful in 2007, despite having 4 (FOUR!!!) recievers that are currently contributing on NFL teams. IF they want to win a National Championship before Beamer retires (next year might be their best chance) they can't have Stinespring up there calling the plays.

I'd also like to point out that the ACC is a much better fit than the Big East ever was for Tech. It may have problems (and I usually don't buy into referee conspiracies that don't involve Duke Basketball), but given the alternative, which would have been a weak BE football conference and a ridiculous 16 team mess for other sports, I'll take the ACC any day.

I watched that on tv once. They had a guy who provided "analysis" for the competition. All he did was wait until one of the teams would drop a cup, and then say "ooh, bit of a mistake there."

    I could have done that.

I think sports that have a serious competitions for children under 4 are evil, like beauty pageants and Barney.

I managed to stay in a hotel that was hosting a toddler pageant one time. Really, really scary and creepy parents. As bad as you would imagine.

Good night for the local teams. Caps do what the Skins couldn't and beat a team from Philly while the Bullets beat the Mavericks in their season opener down in Dallas. The Wizards looked pretty good. I was impressed by the contribution of quite a few players. Gil looks good too.

Meanwhile, ******** Lebron. The Cavs lost.

We get told all the time that we should enter our kid in those pagents, model her, etc. I just reply that there's no way I want to be around some other forgotten Benet relative.

You have to be a little ********ed in the head to do that to your kid.

Key quote from the article (which I agree with):

The reserve league was great... until about 3/4ths of both teams were filled with random guest players. But there was a point where the reserve games were truly reserves vs reserves. Good action for the fans (absolutely can't beat the crowd booing the AR from 2ft away), and good game experience for those guys not playing with the first team.

i think if they bring it back "properly", with enough of a roster to consistently field a reserve team made up of reserves & bench players without guests (unless it's a tryout situation) it could be really good.

Rosters would have to be much bigger though. Unless they let academy players play. Academy guys wouldn't be eligible for 1st team action, but they would help flesh out a roster of guys who consistently play together. The advantage is you can get a "style" of play (I'm not looking to open up that can of worms, really) and teach it to your players all the way down to academy level.

    It's a pipe dream though...

Would academy players keep their amateur status if they played on the reserve team? I agree those games were great fun. I'd even pay a nominal fee to watch the games, $2 maybe.

My fuzzy logic, based on an uneducated guess, is as long as they don't play for 1st team they shouldn't count towards roster. Like the GK Hamid getting signed. Who knows what he made for his contract, but whatever it is it isn't showing up on the books for this season. And presumably he's practicing and treaining with the team.

As far as actual "amatuer" status, I guess that's only relevant if you're playing for college, right? So these wouldn't be kids playing NCAA ball, this is their career.

And I'd totally pay some fee to watch, as long as it was substantially lower than the 1st team tix.

For most of the academy players my guess is that football won't be their career. I'm pretty sure the majority of them want to keep NCAA as an option.

I only saw the first half of the Houston/Seattle game, but from what I saw it was a quintessential example of teams in a big game letting their energy and enthusiasm get ahead of their organization and planning. Lots of open if broken play, but neither side could consistently hold the ball or play as a team.

Oh, and if Blanco really is done in Chicago after this year then Montero inherits the title passed down from Ruiz to Blanco as the most blatantly diving whiner in the league.

The 2nd half was a mirror of the 1st, tons of fouls and players on the ground. Highlight of the game was Sigi "The hut" chewing on his coat collar as if someone put some peanut butter on it.

Ruiz had the epic diving rep. But believe it or not, during the Ruiz era, there was someone who was an even bigger diver, who led the league year after year in the "fouls suffered" statistic by *many tens* of fouls over his nearest competitor (frequently Ruiz), but who just watching him showed to be diving an absurd fraction of the time: Alejandro Moreno.

Super Classico in La Paz this Sunday as The Strongest hosts Bolivar. Either way I'm eating well. The Strongest wins, mom has to make my favorite dinner. If Bolivar gets lucky it's the restaurant of her choice.

    What's your favorite dinner?

(ASIDE: can I take this moment to comment on how ridiculous it is that announcers refer to Chivas USA-LA Galaxy matches as "the Super Classico"? Blame Bretos for coining this phrase, but they all use it now, including Dellacamera and Harkes last night. It's crazy -- nothing about a team that's existed for only five years is worthy of the expression "Super Classico")

I think people misheard Bretos' fake accent. I think he really said "STUPID Classico".
