OK, last time out we all had pretty steeled opinions about nickname and narrowing it down to 2 choices Athletic or Independence. For argument's sake let's say the Franchise name will include Philadelphia, please forward any new ideas, or rehash old ones, and attempt to build concensus with a stunning proposal as to why the team name can't be anything but your proposal. Let's leave Athletic and Independence out, and limit the Brotherhood discussion (sorry, it got pounded last time but there was still 5 pages of argument about it). Central to being a good name is local flavor or history.

Re: It's Dead Horse Time (PHI Team Name)

I suggest Philadelphia Continental S.C. This harkens back to a time when Philadelphia was the center of America. I would like a snake incorporated into the image as well as elements of the more traditional football badges and local state flag images. The name celebrates the contribution of the region to our burgeoning republic and evokes a patriotic sense without pandering.

    MORITURI SALUTAMUS
As y'all know, I vehemently reject your initial premise, especially if the franchise is PHYSCIALLY based in Philly. However, I do heartily embrace your TEAM NAME idea!!
From now on, we're Delaware Valley (or, DelVal, if you prefer, Lord Bryan) Dead Horse!!
Hmmm - DelVal Dead Horse; has a certain RING to it! Then we could get this giant bell and a decapitated horse (straight out of The Sopranos and the folklore of every college in the nation over 103 years old), modeled after the late, great Barbaro...
Or, mortuari salutemus, IF you prefer!

No ideas regarding industry (current or former), history, regional attributes/attitude or sports history?

No takers for Philadelphia Atoms, Fever or Fury? No takers for Longshoremen, Shipwrights, et al.? No takers for no nickname at all? Come on, fresh ideas folks. Please

Up until Toronto was announced, my vote would have been Philadelphia FC. I want a simple, clean sounding name that is the opposite of the early MLS trend with Americanized names. Now, though, I can't really think of anything better than Independence or similar names. I don't want something silly like Brotherhood or Shipwrights (what the hell?). They're silly and obscure.

Well, if you insist on the heat and flame theme, why not just take the plunge, combine all these various "fire" names, and call us (though I think it's already been used somewhere - roller hockey, something minor league?), Philadelphia Firestorm (since it's nuclear in origin ['nucular' if you're Republican], as in an atomic explosion)?
But, all things considered, I STILL like "Dead Horse" (now, did yous DARE dream that I could stay serious for an entire post?)!

Re: It's Dead Horse Time (PHI Team Name)

This idea may be a little bit too far out there, but how about this:

    Philadelphia Masons

Why? Because Pennsylvania was called the "Keystone" of the colonies. For those who don't know, the keystone is the large/angled stone in the middle of the rock that holds both side of an arch together. Masons are the builders of arches ( i think). I know that when you say Keystone it refers to the whole part of the state of PA (even the Alabama part in the middle), but Philadelphia should also be considered to be a keystone.

I am just throwing this idea just to throw it out there. I doubt that anybody would honestly consider this idea in the first place, but I do think that something to do with the keystone name is a good idea. The name Masons doesn't sound too appealing, plus you might have a problem with the name being copyrighted (the free masons).

Re: It's Dead Horse Time (PHI Team Name)

would anyone be averse to the idea of having our club act as a "chivas USA" of sorts where an outside club from another country sets up one in philadelphia? something like Philadelphia Red Devils based off Man U (the glazers wouldn't do that in Philadelphia and not Tampa but its just an example and you get the idea). I think it'd be nice to have that kind of financial backing for our dp slots when we get a team.

Truthfull I just want a team. I haven't heard of any club investors lining up for this market. Though Philadelphia Celtic would make sense and be historically accurate.

    Philadelphia Union SC

Referring back to the whole "Keystone State", preserving the Union during the Am. Rev. and what not.

I really like Independence FC or SC. Very traditional. One of my thoughts was for the "Benjamin Franklin FC", because I admire him so much and I think he's the greatest american EVER. Then to have the badge echo the kite with a key on the end. I get a kick out of some of the obscure soccer teams from around the globe like, Newell's old Boys, The Strongest, etc... SO I think the Franklin name is original and a little kooky, just the way I like it. Then of course Sons of Ben is the absolute perfect name for it's supporters. But then again after I win the Powerball I'll probably name the team Independence FC and build the stadium on one of the spots where the casinos were planned on the river right off I95.

Good god in heaven... We're in the United States, we call it Soccer. I venomously HATE the idea of having a Philadelphia team called "F.C."

Just make it Philadelphia S.C., or my personal favorite "Philadelphia Independence S.C."

Of course, I'd rather have it called "Philadelphia Rose Pedals and Fairy Farts" than "Philadelphia F.C."

Philadelphia Athletic is my absolute front running favorite. I like Independence or Philadelphia Independence second. Philadelphia Celtic third. Philadelphia City fourth. Philadelphia Union fifth. Philadelphia SC sixth. Five County Football Club seventh. Philadelphia Atoms eighth. Philadelphia Fury ninth. Olde City SC tenth. Keystone eleventh. Philadelphia Continentals last.
