Lots of noise this past week on Twitter, opining on RevsGirls concept.

Poll choices represent some of the thinking out in the Twittersphere.

Poll is not displaying votes publicly. Secret ballot this time.

[No, this is not a thread to discuss individual RevsGirls. Sorry...]

A Casual Fan, What motivates you to even make such a suggestion of getting rid of them? If others like them, what's it to you?

My bad. Read a few 2ndary sources that said "none". Did not have time to do the primary research across all MLS team sites.

If possible, would replace it with:

"No other MLS team, save one, has this sort of thing".

    ...and it's Chivas.

I really wish they would at least update their jerseys, still using the crappy ones with the silver shoulders.

Possibly, though the only thing I remember from last year's match were youngish players doing ball tricks on the sideline.

Actually, that was Chicago I was thinking of.

A lot of assumptions rolled up in there!

1.) A poll is not a suggestion, it is a list. I am not suggesting it. Please read one more time -- "Poll choices represent some of the thinking out in the Twittersphere."

Much of recent sentiment on Twitter is anti-"RevsGirls concept". (If you haven't been on Twitter, you wouldn't know that. That's why I mentioned Twitter, so that folks could go look for themselves.)

The sudden trend on Twitter caught me by surprise. This poll was to get another sense of it, from a different slice of the fanbase, since there wasn't much noise within the BigSoccer community one way or the other.

2.) And -- "If others like them, what's it to you?" You are making another big assumption there. Many who follow the NERevs feed on Twitter and cared to recently Tweet DON'T like the concept. From what source are you observing data to conclude the opposite?

What's it to you if anyone likes them or not? Simply disregard the poll if the range of opinions out there in the wild is upsetting or uncomfortable to you. Or else vote that you like them. Either is fine. (But, please do let others have their own opinion.)

Anticipating responses such as yours is the exact reason I made this poll a secret ballot. I suspected this could be a touchy topic. Thanks for providing visible evidence supporting my decision.

I'll be honest. I don't care. They don't add ANYTHING to my game experience, but neither do they detract from it. From what I can tell on Twitter, there's two forms of complaints about the Revs Girls. 1) It's really the only marketing the Revs seem to be doing currently. That part I agree with. 2) This is anti-feminine. That part I don't agree with or care about.

Personally I don't care either way. I don't pay attention to them nor do they hurt my time at a game. I just don't get the hatred for them.

Yeah, I pretty much feel the same as Monty. I'd rather they used whatever money it costs on other marketing. Other than that, whatever, not interested.

wow so much to bitch about with this team and the Revs girls really are a non factor in it all. It does not hurt anyone here, on twitter or anyone else for that matter if the Revs employee some cute girls to do promotions.

OK, thanks for the research (or first hand knowledge?)

Once the primary research contributions are all in, I can petition the mods to update the related poll choice wording to be precise.

Ahh, yes, one other missing poll choice.

"Spend money allocated to RevsGirls on other critical priorities."

No, that doesn't apply. I'd doubt they spend almost on anything on the Revs Girls.

I believe they get a small rate for going out and doing events. Other than that, there's really no cost to the Revs. Which is why it fits their marketing plan so f'in well.

I voted with the majority here. Let's be honest: the Revs Girls is sexist as a concept, and represents a mentality that last had any real currency in about 1965. And from a marketing point of view, it's ridiculous. Does it really draw in a single new fan? I'd guess it alienates many more potential fans than it attracts. What really works for places like Seattle and Portland is that fandom is a participatory culture. Sexism, on the other hand, is, by definition, exclusionary. So yeah, this is at best, MLS 1.0, where teams had no idea what really worked, and went with the tried-and-true from other sports: cheerleaders and fuzzy mascots. But now we pretty much know that approach doesn't work, so let's move on.

Probably like $50 a game like Pats cheerleaders or less.

I can't believe it took this topic to get me fired up about the Revs.

Excluding the billions upon billions in sales of products that use spokespeople who are as attractive as possible, no currency since 1965.

One of their main functions is handing out schedules and cozies at bar events. People who go to bars gussy themselves up for a reason, and most people who frequent those places are dudes. Presentable, attractive girls are almost exclusively used for bar promotions to this day, even in a post-1965 world. There is no telling how many tickets they have sold as a result, but the word gets out to a younger demographic.

Starting their franchises at the right time for that was the major factor.

Oh, I'd contend fans partnering with a political 401c group is far more exclusionary than anything the Rev Girls can muster.

The Rev Girls are spokespeople who are part of an attempt at an "all of the above" marketing approach. I don't think the FO does enough, probably because ours looks like this and there are other teams who are staffed like this (and they don't list every underling).

I voted for the first option.
