    The season began great.
Our team started leaking goals on the back. Morales wasn't truly connecting.
So our whole schema, specially at the end of the season was to over compensate on defense and try to do the best with one man in the box making a good run.
And so we began winning games again, until we got complacent with it.

None of the offseason additions were useful. Morales, even at his best, is now figured out. We slowed down considerably. We got results, but not because we truly dominated.

It was the season of unfulfillement. We overachieved despite the team we had. We all know this coconut had leaked enough creativity, youth, and passion of its shell. By this second leg, we just hoped we could just get to penalty kicks so we could depend on Rimando, the only solid part of our team.

I don't know what I am saying. I am ready for the offseason and to get past this bitter one.

Is now this core and this generation officially over?
How will this roster and franchise change over the offseason?
Any positive thoughts left to be said about this overachieving, but rarely redeeming group of players?

At some point we'll turn this into the post-2012 RSL News thread. But now I am just too depressed to care.

Duiz copy and paste your post from the other thread. Stupid "new" BS doesn't allow me to merge it with an existing thread.

over achieving? i certainly dont think so. the put together the greatest home field runs in MLS history, went to 5 consecutive playoffs and got 50 or more points in 3 straight seasons. given the talent this team has, i fully expect those kinds of results. why i don't expect and am extremely disappointed in is that we have 1 piece of hardware to show for all that.

For having no DPs, outside of Sabo, and being a small market team... We achieved more than expected.

Maybe crashing out of the CCL this year already fulfilled my yearly dose of bitter rage, but I'm already over it.
I knew it was over once we subbed in Steele to be completely honest.

There's no way to say this without sounding furious, but this is the perfect excuse to start anew.
RSL has become too good to stay good.
We want to be great and I don't think anyone could argue that we haven't seen the fabled 2010 beautiful play for a long time.
    Teams have figured us out.
(Easy when you do your best to keep everything the same.)

    It's time to start over.
The salary cap doesn't leave us with much choice anyways.
We need to do a full sweep of this team.
Get rid of the rust, scout around, bring in a lot of trialists, and switch up the game plan.

If this offseason isn't one of our busiest then we are doomed to continue failing.

cant believe all the back patting and self satisfaction RSL is posting on their twitter feed right now. are fans THAT happy with this season? IMO it's been a total disaster, failed to qualify for the knockout round of CCL, failed to get out of the first round of the playoffs, failed to even come close to the SS. we aren't going to get a spot in next years CCL. soooo, we won the RMC i guess. in every measurable category of success you can base a season off of, this RSL team has failed. yay for getting the most points in our history, yay for qualifying for the playoffs.....bullshit. that should be the status quo for this group. winning hardware is all that mattered and they came up short in every way.

I kind of agree with Duiz. I'm not sure RSL was radically over achieving so much as being carried by some great core players...but yeah, there's room for progress.

Whelp, add this one to the pileheap of crap performances in a series/big time match at home:

2008 Western Conference Final vs NYRB
2010 Western Conference Playoffs vs FCD
    2011 CCL Final vs Monterrey
2012 CCL Group stage vs FC Herediano
2012 Western Conference Playoffs vs Seattle

You could also throw into that group the 2012 USOC vs Minnesota if you wanted (not to mention other USOC matches)

Meanwhile the list of matches where we do not have "home field advantage" looms large:

2008 Western Conference Playoffs vs Chivas USA
2009 Eastern Conference Playoffs vs Columbus
2009 Eastern Conference Final vs Chicago
2009 MLS Cup Final vs LAG (Neutral Field)
2010/11 CCL Knockout round vs Saprissa
2011 Western Conference Playoffs vs Seattle

Basically the only series/big time match at home we've won was the 2011 CCL Quarterfinals vs Columbus. The only series/big time match on the road we've lost was the 2011 Western Conference finals vs LAG. I will never again support this team having home field advantage unless the league allows the team to determine which match it has at home in the series. If RSL is to host a second leg of a series at Rio Tinto you might as well pack up your bags because they are going home (staying home?) empty handed.

Because every other team with home field advantage in this year's playoffs has done so well with it...

Yeah. I was a little irked by that, though I think the RSL twitter feed is more about celebrating the good things than analyzing all the stuff that went wrong. Garth Lagerway was pretty clear in his comments before the season started that the FO expected this group to win one or more trophies. As it didn't happen, I suspect he will be true to his word and that there will be significant consequences.

I wonder if the league would ever entertain the idea of letting the higher seed choose which leg they played at home.

with how the series have gone thus far, I would hope they would at least be open to it.
The bigger issue, I think, is with the layout of the playoffs this year. Having the 2nd leg should be more of an advantage, but it's not when there is so little time for rest between games. We can't complain too much as we had the most rest between the 2 legs, but you could tell teams just didn't have time to recover

Which only further supports my point, what is the point of having homefield advantage if it is of zero advantage anyways? 0-4 in this seasons playoffs (technically 0-3 since DC should have had homefield, but had to switch because of Hurricane Sandy/NY problems). an option would be to give the higher seed the choice, as was mentioned. i see no reason why RSL would advance in a 2 leg series with the 2nd leg at home, history is completely indicative of this teams' failures in those situations. once, maybe twice, you chalk it up to bad luck. but 5, 6 or more times, that's a trend and it says everything you need to know. ESPECIALLY when the opposite set of circumstances has been so beneficial to RSL as history has also indicated repeatedly.

Honest question. I've wondered this for a while. Why do we have such problems when we are given the (supposed) advantage? We have done historically much different than statistics would suggest. Is it a coaching thing, a player thing or just an anomaly?

I miss RSLFM, right now here insight and ideas would be a breath of fresh air. She had an uncanny ability to present logical arguments and ideas that would better this team and in a way that never sounded threatening or arrogant. I read all the shit RSL is posting on twitter and it makes my blood boil. I don't know how anyone can be happy right now with how much a failure this season has been.

I don't know what it is, mental, coaching, apathy, complacency, arrogance of being at "The Fortress".....whatever it is it definitely is NOT an anomaly. Like I said, once or twice, that's an anomaly, but 5 or more times and almost every single year, that's a trend. It's a trend that is personified by our historically positive results when the team is put in the exact opposite set of circumstances. Home field advantage = RSL losing in five out 6 independent events. No home field advantage = RSL winning in 6 out of 7 independent events.

This year I'm not sure having the opening game at home would have made any difference.

Ironically, I think our ultimate downfall in the Herediano game and against Seattle was the fact that we could advance with a 1-0 score and we went into the games effectively tied. I wonder if both results would have been different if we knew we needed to press harder from the start, or in the case of Seattle, had they scored their goal in minute 20 vs. minute 80.

Seems like little urgency to grab the goal.

i'm not sure it would have, this team isn't built in that manner IMO. in our only example of such an event (2010 playoffs vs FCD) we failed miserably. if you remember we absolutely blew the first game on the road 2-1 (when we could have won 1-0 or better, we scored an early goal and then let FCD have their way) with morales picking up a red card. the return leg at Rio Tinto saw us attacking with a vengeance, giving up a relatively early goal and then fighting helplessly the rest of the game to try and score at least 2 goals. we got one back, late in the match, but we were really never a threat to advance. IMO that was the best RSL team we have ever had and they couldn't get it done with a home second leg.

Here's the thing to remember about the RSL twitter feed: It's a sales tool, not a forum for hard-hitting soccer analysis. RSL is a company and their twitter feed is no different than your company's twitter feed: Expect them to emphasize the good, gloss over (or ignore) the bad, and do whatever they can to get people excited about their product.
