Going to be an interesting (or very worrying) few weeks for the Academy and its survival

2 weeks time - due to travel and stay in Boston for 2 nights (say $100 per night plus travel and food).......estimate = $300+

4 weeks time - due to go to the Winter Showcase in Florida for 4 nights (say $250 for flights and $80 per night hotels plus food)..........estimate = $800+

Now what happens if the players (or read parents) cannot afford to pay what is going to be quite an expense?

Does the team simply not travel or in fact does it just fold?

I honestly do not think that many of the players will be able to pay the above, in such short notice and only 7 weeks till Chrostmas

And that does not include the cost for the coaching staff

    So what happens then? :eek::eek:

    1. Why do you say it's not "feasible"?

    2. Why "from a management prospective (it's perspective)" it's not a "high priority"?

Just wondering where you're getting all of this from.

    Typo's happen. You got me.

It's just my opinion. Judging from the fact that they are severing their relationship right now, they don't see it as something that they can or want to do right now. Otherwise why would they stop their affiliation with Gottschee?

And I'm saying it's not a high priority in terms of achieving the ultimate goal of getting a stadium and an MLS franchise.

It's just speculation based on the situation.

It's not a typo, they are different words that you confused. I wasn't trying to get you, only point out you're misusing the word.

They've stopped their affiliation with Gottschee? When? Again, I don't know where you're getting your information from and I'm wondering if you know something we don't.

If you bail on a youth academy, and seriously jeopardize the season of a prestigious 60 year old American soccer club, how exactly does that help you get into MLS? What does that say about your ability to run a club?

It would be incredibly stupid to bail on gottschee if the goal here is to get into MLS. Not to mention, oh you know, an unfair thing to do to the kids.

I think there are a lot of people that dont realize not only the history that Gottschee has but how big they are in the local soccer community in Queens. They have always been a huge club in the Queens area. It will piss off a LOT of people if they do the wrong thing to that club, including some politicians.

Well according to the information provided earlier in the thread there is a strong possibility of it happening. Everything else is just speculation on my part.

And I agree with what you said about how poorly it would reflect on them and how bad it would be for the kids who play for Gottschee.

Just had a further update and from what I am told, it is a major disaster about to happen to the Academy

    BW Gottschee

    http://www.bwgottschee.org/

are presently out of pocket by over $210000, and should have been paid by Cosmos on the 1st August

They have been promised the money on numerous occasions and have now taken legal action and appointed lawyers to recover the money they are owed

As a result, "Cosmos" will be moving to a Pay to Play scenario with immediate effect and parents should be notified this week of what they need to pay for their 1st 2 games in Boston and then the trip to Florida - all in, estimated at around $1000+................only a few weeks from Christmas

Seemingly parents attended the meeting tonight where Giovanni attended (on behalf of Cosmos) as well as several members of BWG

Gio confirmed he was hopeful of receiving the money on Friday (though BWG stated they had been told that almost weekly since Aug 1st) - so not looking good and when pressed, BWG confirmed they did not believe the money would come through, which is why a legal team has now been appointed to recover the debt

Gio also read out a letter from Terry Byrne (received today he stated) that the money would be paid, but that he could not confirm when, as the final parts of the take over were still being finalised

A further communication will be issued later in the week with the figures parents have to pay, as well as hopefully further communication from Gio, providing an update on funding

But from what I hear, BWG do not think this will happen and it is looking more and more likely that the ties between BWG and Cosmos will be broken sooner rather than later

Though where does that leave the players who cannot afford to pay to play?

Will update if I hear anything further :(

Actually I attended the Gottschee meeting with Parents tonight.

Gottschee has filed legal actions against the Cosmso for payment.

cosmos had a rep on site at the meeting.

Gottschee right now is preparing for the worst but all in attendance are hopeful this will be rectified.

Apparently the new owners of the Cosmos have full intention to honor the contract but the changes have made the timeline of the payment unknown. They are very behind but said they WILL pay but Gottschee has been dealing with this for months and understandably are protecting their historic club so the kids can play.

Apparently Terry is on his way to London to meet the new owners and hopefully there is more information on the payments next week. Gottschee is hopefull that it will all work out.

Sad situation but this could be the first thing the NEW OWNERS do right to start winning back some of reputation that is in the shits right now.

    Latest update on the Academy;

TO ALL U16/U18 ACADEMY PLAYERS & PARENTS:

Please see below notice from BW Gottschee club.

    Parents,

Thank you all for your attendance last night; we are sorry it has come to this and apologize for the hardship and inconvenience created. Despite repeated assurances to the contrary, funding for the Academy program contractually promised by the New York Cosmos to be delivered on August 1, 2011, has yet to arrive and has put the Club (Gottschee) under severe financial stress and in a position where it will not be able to meet its financial obligations. The Club feels it would be irresponsible to all parties concerned if it ignored this unfortunate reality and continued business as usual.

Therefore, regrettably and effective immediately, the Club has no choice but to transition its Academy program back to a "pay to play" scenario as existed prior to the NY Cosmos organization sponsorship agreement.

Registration Fee. Players will be required to pay fees for coach’s expenses and training facilities. The club is working through the required cost structure which we will finalize in the next week or two. As a gauge, the amount will approximate $1,700 which will be payable in two installments.
Travel Expenses. Players are responsible to pay for all Travel expenses associated with the Academy program including trips to league games, showcase events and any other events. Since we have not made reservations for trips in 2012, it is difficult to provide an estimate...but Club would use as a gauge a range of $2,000-$2,500, subject to final actual expenses.

Two trips scheduled in next month and estimated costs for each are due as follows:

    Due Nov. 13 Boston trip-$200

Due Nov. 22 Sarasota, FL showcase-($800)

We ask that parents and players contact the manager/administrators to confirm continuing in the Academy program for 2011-12 season or if you have any questions/concerns on or before Wed., November 9th.

    BW Gottschee Board.

6 weeks before Christmas - how are parents going to pay for that?

$1000 for 2 trips, plus $850 x 2, all before the end of the year!!!!!!

A DISGRACE AND SHAMEFUL ALL ROUND

A disgrace indeed to local soccer, hope they pay up ASAP. Glad I didn't buy a Cosmos jersey...

Ouch $2k to play soccer in at the 'elite youth level'! That is a lot of grocery money!

THIS NEEDS TO HIT THE LOCAL PRESS , as well as the UK press who heralded the magnificant return of the NY Cosmos at Manchester!!

    • Training = $1700
    • Travel Expenses = $2500
    • 2 trips before end of 2011 = $1000
So a total of $5200...........per player.............some families have more than 1 player!!

Seriously, how are families supposed to pay $5200 or double or treble if they have 1/2 or 3 players at the academy?

Gottschee is going to see how the meetings go this week with Terry and the new owners

I have also made some introductions to Gottschee with a local group looking to assist for a bit.

If by next week Gottschee does not get a more concrete answer, then they will probably get uglier - right now to their credit, they are making the necessary moves and acting in a professional fashion about it.

This is horrid PR for the Cosmos and they have to fix it.

You know whats disgusting, some of the great players in the world at one time didn't even have shoes or a ball to play with growing up and now kids have to pay insane amounts of money to play a sport that requires a ball and some grass. You wonder why countries around the world are in the shape that there in. Sports in the country should be free and any money needed should be done through fund raising by schools/parents like it use to be. Stop buying $200 soccer shoes made with plastic that costs 2 cent's and doesn't give you a good feel for the ball and get the $50 old leather boots that mold to your feet and fit like a glove and give you more control of the ball. Stop feeding the soccer industry money for inferior products like balls that dip and dive all over the place and get back to real grass roots soccer/football.

How about MLS stepping in, there next big market team will come from NY , what better way to throw some support to NY soccer then by helping one of the oldest soccer institutions in NY area.

Nah - MLS will not step in - this was PKs business decision.

Look, this will say a lot about the new group if they fulfill this. They said they want MLS - they can easily have an academy that is fully functional.

MLS will not step in - this is the Cosmos relationship to fix.

I heard the overall "we still want MLS". They say the goals are the same, actions will speak that.

Sela just took over a few weeks ago and they seem to want to rectify this. This group has the money to make things right, the only question is if they have the will. Since contracts were signed, then they'll have no choice but to do so. Not only that, but they're likely on the hook for the full length of the total agreement. I think BWG will be fine in the end. It's just going to take a little time. They have to sort through the clusterf**k that they've been left with. This may not be the only financial loose end that PK left behind. Hopefully this will get done in a timely manner.

I don't see them not settling this in the end, even if thier goal no longer was to join MLS. Contracts were signed and this company does business here in the US. They have to pay. This is mainly a matter of the timing being horrible for them due to the buyout and the reorganization. But I think that this situation is one of the reasons that Sela fired everyone when they took over.

I think this will be the outcome too - but time is easy for us fans to say. The people from Gottschee have been going through this since AUGUST 1st. AUGUST!

I get it, its a business decision and everything needs to be sorted out but why couldnt they work something out to HONOR this for the KIDS sake. They all have the money to make the 250K payment from August 1st.

Right now you have a bunch of kids who are playing for an academy being told they might have to go play for another academy, leave their teamates and friends because the parents can not afford 2-5K in this academy.

Yes, i think they will honor it but it has taken way to much time already.

Someone should have stepped up and did the right thing for the kids. Time is easy for us to say, but the meeting the other night, the expressions on the parents faces said it all.

Why would MLS clean up the mess the Cosmos created? Especially considering that the Cosmos were never the leading candidate.

If you want nice and charitable then you should go convince PK and TB to pay the bill. After all, these are two honest individuals who have only the growth of NYC soccer in mind. Or at least that's what you were led to believe...

The meeting was supposedly held yesterday (November 9th) between Terry Byrne and the new owners in London

I would hope that something comes out fairly quickly to confirm the position to BWG and the parents

I know of several parents who have already confirmed that they cannot pay the cash being suggested ($5000+) and therefore puts their sons continued participation at risk I guess??

Boston is now 1 week away and the Florida Showcase only 3 weeks away

Parents need to know what is happening on both fronts - are hotels, flights, travel, etc being booked - are the trips happening...........what happens if kids (parents) cannot pay????

Giovanni confirmed to the parents on Monday night he would communicate directly to the parents (though not sure by what means!) the result of the meeting ……………….so where is the communication or when is it due to come out?

There has been no request from BWG for payment of any trips or coaching as yet, but that cannot continue – you cannot have coaches turning up without being paid!

So we really need an update to this disgrace this week - one way or another
