Based on the performance vs Japan u23, Martinez isnt worth more than 5M. He's overrated.

Well it's dumb to rate any one player on one performance. I hope we all know that.

I know. However, he's not worth anywhere near 40M. 40M is for attacking players. Martinez is a good player but not something extraordinary to be worth that much money. Ramires went to Chelsea for around 20M. That's the price people should be looking at. Not more not less.

Also if you dont understand that pros need their regeneration after the long season and playing CL till summer (like Mata and Alba did) or EL (like Martinez) and the EC (like all of them did) and not playing the olympic crap tournament there is no room for discussion anyway

That's not even the talking point here. No one is worth their inflated market value today.

the price for a player is determined by his quality, demand and supply overall and the subjective preference of the buyer (his positional needs, his valuations, etc) and restrictions (like a exit clause) on seller side. If you dont understand the difference between market value and investment value (that is what every player purchase fundamentally is) then go look it up

True, but in this case it seems clear that what Bilbao is asking is considerably more than his actual market value or else one of the spendthrift teams would have already bagged Martinez. The market suggests that he's worth significantly less than his buyout clause.

If Martinez would give Bayern a 100% certainty to win the CL next season I can guarantee you that they would pay the exit clause (as the CL prize money would make it profitable most certainly). Apart from that market values are nice high/low balling technique in negotiations, but in the end usually the valuation what a player is subjectively worth to the buyer determines the price

Well what is considerably? And where does it star and end with every other player? It's not unusual for this to happen in the transfer market. There is a lot of demand for Bilbao/Spanish players and Martinez is on top of that list now. Simple economics. Bayern aren't going to make the price drop because of logic or because of their financial policy. It's a question of whether they are willing to spend for a player who they believe will push them over the edge.

Unfortunately, the buying club, don't really set the transfer fees; the seller does. If a club doesn't like it, watch out...another mega-club might just spend the ridiculous money that is being asked...because they can.

Honestly if martinez signing sets on a path of titles again within the first year then might be worth it.

It's a matter of how badly bayern FO need him and also if they don't have him, what their back up plan is and what they plan to do for this coming season..

Sure, but all this shows is that Bilbao are happy to hold on to Martinez for the time being and that his value is less than 40M, since nobody -- including Bilbao -- are paying that for him at the moment.

And the question you ask above is typical of an economic bubble. The current market stopped tracking intrinsic value a while back when the billionaires jumped in and began spending stupid money. You can't sustain this and it will break entire leagues. Rangers should be a warning.

The crash, when it comes, is going to swallow whole teams and humble leagues.

New players never guarantee trophies. Just ask Real how that has worked for them in the CL.

SoccerMIGermany: Spot on on the crash coming ... Those you continue to advocate to spend ridiculous numbers are not looking at the big picture.

And what's wrong with what Bilbao are doing? They don't operate like other clubs. They can hang on to him just fine. They win either way.

Nothing wrong with what Bilbao are doing. I'm not complaining. I'm just glad for the sake of the market that Bayern are being rational. They could afford Martinez, but acquiring him for that cost would inflate the bubble even more.

we talk again after the season, because you obviously don't see any risk in a key player (like Schweinsteiger for us last season) getting all of a sudden injured and not recovering fast enough
