University of Pacific announced their move from the Big West Conference to the WCC. As part of this meeting he mentioned that they would be adding Mens Soccer in 2015.

What a great day. Lets hope this can start a trend.

Video from the event is found here:

    Soccer mentioned about minute 22:20

BYU and Pepperdine are the only WCC schools who do not have Mens Soccer.

BYU does have a Varsity team, but plays in the PDL.

this is one of those "WTF" moments. they had plenty of time to build a program in the Big West. they are only now starting a men's soccer team right when they leave?

however, it is nice that at least one more school plays the sport and that is what i want to see. the more, the merrier

A natural travel partner for Saint Mary's.

Anything that creates more scholarship slots and more jobs is good for college soccer.

Wow, didn't see that coming! But it's great. Maybe Pepperdine will finally jump on board. The Waves easily could have the most beautiful pitch in the NCAA, and recruiting to that campus with those coeds would be easy (basically a smaller, more country clubish UCSB).

I haven't ever been to Pacific. What's the campus like?

I went to Sacramento State, less than an hour to the north of UOP in Stockton. Bt this was in the late '90s. I went to two soccer matches down there. One was Sac State women at UOP. I don't have good memories of the accomodations. I remember sitting on a dirt hill after exhausting myself standing for part of the match. There was one bench, and it was broken beyond use. I hope things have improved.

The other match was Sweden WNT vs. Japan WNT in a scrimmage that was actually in the football complex. Nothing to write home about, but at least there were bleachers, and lots of them.

I will say I welcome this non-conference rivalry, which is good in other sports.

Stockton is currently in the news as teetering on the edge of bankruptcy and crime infested. Pictures of the campus look nice but when don't they?

Stockton has always SUCKED. I lived in nearby Modesto in the mid 60s and it was lousy back then as well.

Ditto on Stockton in general. The twice I went down there was late 90's, and downtown was full of urban decay. Haven't bee back since. I keep hearing about some renewal project, but I'm not sure if it's just lipservice by the CVB and city council.

Hopefully the Pacific campus is top notch. But even if it is, recruiting to an oasis in the middle of an apparently unfun town could prove difficult in California, i.e., many other good options.

Stockton has a port for ocean-going vessels, and there are parts of the town that read below sea level on my GPS when traveling through town.

Yeah...UoP is easy to make fun of as far as the name is concerned. It did start in Santa Clara, which is a little closer to the Pacific, but it was never a Pepperdine or UCSB as far as location is concerned.

As for the actual campus...it's pretty nice, like most universities. The community directly around campus isn't too bad either, but it drops off from there. Stockton has a reputation for a reason. I don't think it's as horrible as some people make it out to be, but it certainly isn't paradise either.

Yep. Dropped from 16 to 40, I think. Not season-ending but a wake-up call, but not for lack of trying. Here is video of shots and Pacific's GK doing work (posted also in West thread):
