Dude, that's not education. Business, science, and technology are education. They get jobs. The other subjects are filler that raises our property taxes.

    Holowhatever.

So, as a teacher of social studies, I should quit my job because it has no employment value?

You are failing in your's & everybody of our generations duty to help create mindless unquestioning drones so the answer is probably yes.

Dyvel, Q*bert Jones III and Orlando Rays repped this.

I'd take the story more seriously if it didn't originate at The Blaze. And if it was open about what percentage of respondents were sufficiently stupid to warrant inclusion.

That said, for most college students I know, Viet Nam, W.W. One, the Thirty Years War and the Peloponnesian Wars are equally ancient.

Some of this is pathetic, though not really surprising. But some of it is just piling on.

I say this as a Jew: I just wouldn't expect most college students to know the specific name of the Nuremberg Laws (though I'd expect them to know such laws existed in Nazi Germany). Nor would I expect most college students to know about the St. Louis, or the twin experiments, or the Warsaw uprising.

And some of this isn't specifically Holocaust ignorance, it's WWII and general American history ignorance.

But that's what you get if you don't put resources and people into education.

Why is the Holocaust the only genocide that gets this extra special treatment?

Because it was perpetrated by 20th century Europeans in a supposedly civilized, modern European country.

As opposed to the genocides perpetrated in the 19th century by supposedly civilized Europeans?
I'm referring to my own country, FWIW, and it's not like that is well taught either.

That pretty much summarizes why I'm dubious of The Blaze caring about this issue. Glenn Beck is rich because of general historical ignorance, and he's pretty suspicious of education.

The Holocaust is in another category because of the advanced industrial methods used and the sheer amount of people killed in a short time, I believe the Wannasee (sp?) Conference when the Final Solution was approved was in the beginning of 1942. Of course the Rwandans basically matched the Germans with speed.

Speaking of ignorance (my own) what exactly is The Blaze?

    Wiki is pretty helpful...

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TheBlaze

TheBlaze, (formerly titled GBTV), is a libertarian conservative news, information, andentertainment television network (and affiliated properties) founded by talk radio personalityGlenn Beck. The majority of its programming is broadcast from its headquarters in Dallas, Texas at the historic studios at Las Colinas. Other programming is based in New York City, New York.

The network is available primarily through internet streaming on its website or its iOS app. It is also available on Dish Network channel 212.

Glenn Beck doesn't carry much credibility at this point, with me.

Oh, they care. But that has mostly to do with the modern GOP's (at this point sad) coveting of Jewish voters. This also feeds into the evangelical Christian philosemitism and zionism that are so prevalent today (and that feeds into winger politics all the time). Of course, most of us American Jews are having none of it, and vote against the GOP at every opportunity we get.

Do people listen to it in any numbers? I'd honestly never heard of it and if you hadn't commented I wouldn't have clicked on the link. So this is Beck's main outlet since he left radio (the first time)?

Really was any nation (other than Switzerland) civilized in the 1940s?

Well, the link says the telecast of the RADIO show brings ten million viewers. That is, (allegedly) 10 million people tune in to watch Glenn talk to a microphone in a studio.

There are certain bigsoccer posters (and the OP on this thread IS NOT one of them, so far as I know) who will pop up in this forum and keep running with an easily-refuted argument -- when that is happening, you can bet that said argument is featured on the front page of the website. That's pretty much its purpose.

I guess you are really out of touch when you don't know what you don't watch (or listen to).

You'd think that having several generations to consider and reconsider both the treatment of the Indians and the American slave trade --but continuing both-- would put the USA and CSA in a category alongside Nazi Germany, or a worse one. Certainly there are others, but these two come immediately to mind.

Hitler was crazy and all-powerful. Between that and the fact that the Holocaust took place in a very short time, almost too quickly for any sort of protest to gain speed and size (it was over before almost anyone but the victims and perps knew about it), you'd have to be looking only at mortality rates for one and not the lingering effects of equally inhumane acts for the other- committed over time, over the protests of many and with full knowledge of anyone within the nation's borders. The Holocaust didn't drive Judaism into extinction or into museums, but the westward expansion of Europeans into the United States destroyed a whole bunch of Indian nations or made them insignificant. "They killed a lot of people really, really quickly at the behest of a few dozen men who were scared to death of one" doesn't sound as cold-blooded to me as "They sat down together and planned that shit, carried it out, thought about it, listened to folks who might disagree, thought about it again, and carried it out some more... over decades".

Interesting points - I'm including Canada in the Indian genocide too - though if we want to discuss both indigenous genocides combined with slavery we really need to include the European nations - particularly the UK, Spain, the Netherlands & Portugal and the colonial nations they spawned - too numerous to mention individually but I'm thinking South Africa, Brazil, Mexico - as all behaved similarly.

Also - it's also worth putting out the UN definition of genocide as a reference:

    I get that.

I don't want to be the one to do that. Because I'm often "accused" of adressing color, I put it out there in hopes that someone else would go with it, but so far, no one's picked up the torch. Soooo, we see why I'm the one who gets "accused" of addressing color- if I don't do it, seems it won't get done.

I do want to address the Indian issue (which is also one of color), because their treatment was even worse than mine.

    Works for me.
