This thread is for thoughts on the best possible starting lineup for the USMNT upcoming match against Mexico. With that being said there should not be any postings that include players such as Freddy Adu, Jemal Johnson, Marvel Wynne, Kevin Alston, or Preston Zimmerman. In other words, as great as these players may be in the future, use the current USMNT player pool. This thread is not for WC 2010 predictions. I might buy a line-up that would include Jonathan Spector, but let’s be realistic here.

This is who I would like the starting eleven to be.

    ----------------------------|Howard|-----------------------------
    -------------------Onyewu-----------Marshall---------------------
    ------Gibbs-----------------------------------------Bocanegro----
    ---------------------------Mastroeni------------------------------
    ---Beasley------------------Donovan--------------------OBrien----
    -------------Johnson--------------------------Mcbride------------

Personally, I think Mastoeni, Mcbride, and OBrien might eventually need to be replaced. However, they may be the best we have at those spots right now. Sorry, not a Hejduk or Cherundolo fan. Although, I would most likely put Hejduk on the roster. I also think Pope, along with Sanneh, needs to sit this one out. Pope is a great player, but has been looking rusty lately and needs to take a break or something. Mathis and Reyna… well, I think they may need to follow the foot steps of Joe Max Moore. Keller is debatably the best/most consistent Goal Keeper the USMNT has right now, but I would like to see Howard get the chance.

bring in Zavagnin if we are tied or winning or if we are down bring in Wolff if we are down. i'm sure we will be very tired in the last 20 minutes, so bring dempsey in for some energey and bite. I also think Hejduk could be useful in this game, he always comes up big in big moments and has such great fitness.

I'd throw Eddie Gaven into the Lion's Den!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111 :D Buddle won't be given a chance and that is unfortunate, WHY the fvck Not BRUCE???????????? Anyway, I'd put Dempsey at forward, he can do it all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    ------------------------------|Keller|-----------------------------
    -------------------Onyewu-----------Bocanegra---------------------
    ------Cherundolo-----------------------------------------Gibbs----
    ---------------------------Mastroeni------------------------------
    ---Gaven------------------Donovan--------------------Beasley----
    -------------Johnson--------------------------Dempsey/Buddle------------

And for Mexico I'd go for the kill and try to run up the score...

I’m predicting a blow-out 4, or 5 to nil!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You heard it here first and I will remind you of it when it happens.

Of course if I’m wrong and it’s a close game, I will edit this post and delete all my predictions. :D

People, let's not forget that in creating a 'realistic' lineup for Mexico, Bruce and Mooch on a number of occasions said that we'd be using more MLS players in Mexico than against Trinidad and Tobago. So count the number of MLSers that played in T & T, add more people, and then compile your new roster. Also, don't forget that Bruce needs to get points from Guatemala, so we can't use up all our best players against Mexico. This is why the MLSers are practicing so hard this time around. Of course, we'll be using Donovan and Beasley for the full 90 both times, but otherwise, the other nine are questionable with respect to playing time. Oh, and one more thing... Buddle?! I think you need to be in the camp in order to get playing time in the match. He's not a yank abroad. Just a hunch, but a pretty darn good one.

I think Cherundolo has earned his spot at right back, I mean he's the captain of Bundasliga club! Who else in the States at the moment can play at that level every weekend? Also, most the veteran players, 30 or older, like Pope, McBride, Zavagnin, Etc. should be replace before the end of WCQ and players like Oguchi, Howard, Gaven, Casey amongst others should be starting in friendly matches more often, maybe they will in the Gold Cup.

Just to clarify, I'm not predicting Mexico to do it only. It's possible the US could do it as well. Like when the Bulls got over the hump in Detroit and blasted the Pistons. I think there is going to be an early goal by one of the teams and then it's going to be an avalanche. Anyway, I'm not a US citizen, but I've lived in the US most of my life, so I'm neutral in this game!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111111

Sorry, not going to happen, either way.

Bruce Arena's team's don't lose by 4-5 goals. And NO ONE can go into Azteca and put four past Mexico in a World Cup Qualifier.

    No one.

Bruce will never use this lineup!
    Onyewu is too inexperienced
O'Brien is not in game shape
    Dempsey is too inexperiencd
    Gaven is too inexperienced

If Reyna is healthy he will start. If not it will likely be Zavagnin
    Pope will start
    Berhalter may start or Hejduk...
McBride may get a look up top with Johnson.

As for getting players out before the WC... it won't happen with guys like Pope and McBride unless we see a huge dropoff in their production.

This is exactly right. Reyna in for Lewis, I doubt we'll see any other changes. Maybe, maybe Hejduk for Cherundolo, but I doubt it. Also maybe somebody else for McBride, but again I doubt it.

Just a little bit of added thought here.....in the most recent issue of Soccer America there is an article on Eddie Lewis. In it he states that Bruce has talked to him about converting to left back. In times past, Eddie was reluctant, but apparently as he ages he's considering it (I think in hopes of getting to stay on the field.)

Do you think such a thing will come to pass sooner or later? Probably not vs. Mexico, but a Lewis LB and Beasley LM might be in the future.

And against Monaco but that was more of a defensive switch to hold on to a lead, lucky for them he also scored.

I think Gibbs and Cherundolo will start against Guatemala. O'Brien and Reyna could possibly play either this game or against Guatemala.

This looks like what I had in mind myself -- a good balance. Mathis played with pace and brilliance vs. Colombia, let's hope he can continue in that vein, playing in two directions.

I worry about the Euros at altitude in Mexico. I see them coming to the fore in Birmingham, rather than in Mexico.

Starting the same people we did in T&T would be the most intelligent and least controversial way to go. 8 Euros and 3 MLSers. Since I'm not that intelligent, I recommend we save that line-up for Guatemala.

I think we should start 3 Euros for the Mexico game. Keller, Donovan and Beasley. The MLS guys are training as a team at altitude. Coach should have a plan by now and these guys are hearing it every day. I don't think flying in the Euros is the way to go for this game. We need to offer some virgins to the Aztec gods (Dempsey, Marshall, ??). Better for the long run. We need to be sure our punk factor is played (Mathis). My prediction (hope) is un Super-Classico...2-2. After the Honduras game, I'll give out the names for my starters.
