Who are the top strikers from each country right now? It's been 2 years since the qualifiers and a lot has changed, some great strikers like Forlan have been struggling, young players like Caicedo are making a name for themselves, and promising guys like Edinson Cavani, Luis Suarez and Alexis Sanchez are becoming real superstars. Who does each country have right now? Who should we be watching in the Libertadores?

Actually I meant to say "Who should we be watching in Copa America?".

Unfortunately, all of the top South American strikers above the age of 22 are playing in Europe or Mexico.

usual suspects mostly....i don't think there will be any brand new guys coming in other than the unbelievably talented Neymar....

the top young guy is probably Alexis Sanchez, who's still barely 22, but Suarez and Cavani are still young, CAicedo too.......

the best are likely to be:
    - Suazo, Sanchez, Forlan, Suarez, Tevez, Higuain, Fabiano, Pato, Falcao, Cavani....maybe a suprise performance from guys who are currently on form like Farfan

I think from that list Suazo, Forlan and Fabiano probably will not be factors 2-3 years from now.

    that's what i said....

it does say something about the need for young stars to come up for 2014...didn't realize dude's like Suazo, Cabanas, Forlan, would be that old...

probably the best forwards today are: suazo (mejor en mexico, goleador ultimas eliminatorias sudamericanas por lejos), alexis sanchez, mauricio pinilla, esteban paredes. from peru, farfan, pizarro. from uruguay: forlan, cavani, suarez, santiago silva. from colombia: rodallega, falcao. from venezuela: rondón. from bolivia: marcelo martins. from ecuador: i dont know since valencia is not a real striker. paraguay: haedo valdes, lucas barrios. argentina: tevez, messi, aguero, higuain, milito, lisandro lopez. brasil: neymar, pato, luis fabiano. thats all

By "today", in a way I do mean 2014...everybody knows the real prize in CONMEBOL is to qualify for the WC, and Copa America is going to be a measuring stick. Fabiano will not be playing in Copa America. Forlan maybe, but probably because he is a big hero in Uruguay and people want to see him after what he did in 2010. Suazo may play for Chile, but only if there are no other young guys that can do better.

The coaches in Copa America are going to be testing out the guys they think will be their main strikers for the qualifying matches, so they have to think about 1-3 years ahead. I think this means any forwards 29 years or older are very unlikely to play much.

well for Chile Borghi has already said that his two forwards are Sanchez and Suazo......

the implication is that this is so not only for the Copa America but for qualifiers as well. in a sense the job is Suazo's to lose, and if he keeps fit and playing well into 2014 he should still be the early favorite to play that WC should Chile qualify.

there's no doubt that Sanchez will be one of the two strikers...although Borghi has indicated that he could also see him in the midfield.

the replacements rights now are Paredes, Pinilla, Mancilla and Munoz.....of these only Munoz is young, and he isn't exactly a classic '9'. unfortunately, there don't appear to be any young goal scoring 'delanteros de area' in Chile right now...

but anyways, our forwards going into Copa America and qualifiers seem to be:
    starters
    Alexis Sanchez
    Humberto Suazo
    ------------
    subs
    Mauricio Pinilla
    Hector Mancilla
    Esteban Paredes

    prospect
    Munoz

You're nuts if you think that anybody is going to Copa America to test players for the qualifiers, at least the ones that have a chance of winning are bringing everything they've got today, especially the proven players.
So there will be plenty of 29 year olds and older, believe me

weeelll...it used to be like a testing ground for a while...when it was done every two years...it kinda lost its flavour and some teams ignored it altogether (see Argentina).

Know that it's back every four years I think there is a bit more pressure to win it...it makes it somewhat more 'valuable' than before, just because it doesn't come around too often.

Respondiendo a la pregunta original del thread, en este momento serían:

    Edinson Cavani (Napoli)
    Alexis Sánchez (Udinese)
    Felipe Caicedo (Levante)
    Lucas Barrios (Dortmund)
    Jefferson Farfán (Schalke)
    Radamel F. García (Porto)
    José Cardozo (Benfica)

    ...entre otros.

Si se incluye en la pregunta a Brasil y Argentina: Luis Fabiano (Sevilla), Sergio Aguero (Atl. Madrid), Carlos Tévez (Man City), Nilmar (Villarreal).

Se ha demarcado como mediapunta en el Scheisske a ratos. Creo que eso califica como "delantero". No?

Looking over the squad lists for tournaments prior to Venezuela 2007, I agree with posteador. That's not to say that teams that sent alternate squads didn't want to win, but they didn't seem to take it all that seriously if they lost. This time though, it seems everyone will be sending their best.
